Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Domain Name?

A domain name is the address at which a website can be found in a form that humans can read (in computer terms it looks like this 154.187.12.199 and is called an IP address).

An analogy for a domain name is a street address.

What is Web Hosting?

Web hosting is generally a portion of a computer’s storage and resources set aside for a specific client. This computer is always connected to the internet and is called a web server (it serves the website up to people who want to view it).

An analogy for web hosting is a block of land.

What is a Website?

A website is a collection of specific files, and usually a database, that when viewed with an internet browser allows a person to view and interact with the website.

A Web Page is just one page within a website whereas a Website represents ALL the pages that belong to it (just like a single page in a book vs the whole book).

An analogy for a website is a house.

What is Content?

Content is information aimed at a specific audience for a specific purpose. It includes written text, images, videos, audio, etc.

An analogy for Content is the people who live in the house.

How does a website work?

The best way to learn something new is to associate it with something you’re already familiar with hence the house analogies above. When a visitor wants to view your website it’s similar to a friend wanting to visit you.

First your friend needs to know where you live, which is your residential address (domain name) and this allows them to find your block of land (web hosting). Then they need to go to the address and enter your house (website) before they can see you (content).

What is a Content Management System (CMS)?

A content management system is a platform that allows the owners of the website to add / edit / delete the content of the website, create blog posts, upload images, etc without the need to touch the technical or design aspects of the website. No other software is required as the website and program to create it are the same thing, all you need is an internet connection and web browser.

Both Drupal and WordPress are examples of website content management systems, but each have their own subtle advantages over each other so the right tool for the job depends on your goals. We can advise you on which is more suitable.

What is SSL and why is it important?

SSL stands for Secure Socket Layer and is technology used to encrypt information that is transmitted between a browser and a server. Google is now penalising websites that are not using SSL certificates to enforces HTTPS (you’ll see a little green padlock in your address bar if it’s enabled on your website). Google is doing this to passively force better security across the internet. Aside from this it’s also beneficial to use SSL to increase your visitor’s confidence in your website and purchasing through it to increase conversion rates (sales).

Do you build cheap websites?

No, we do not. There are many businesses and services offering cheap websites and if you goal is simply to pay the least amount of money possible (thereby limiting your results) then we suggest you seek them out instead.

How much does a website cost?

The cost depends primarily on what your specific goals are, and the method chosen to achieve them. A basic business class website starts around the $3,000-$4,000 range and an eCommerce site starts at $5,000.

How long does it take to build a website?

This will vary depending on the size of the project and the number of other concurrent projects that we have on at the time. As an average timeframe though it takes about 4 weeks from start to finish and ensuring everything is done properly.

Do you build online stores / eCommerce websites?

Yes, we build online stores using a variety of solutions but our preference if eCommerce is your primary objective is to use BigCommerce as opposed to a CMS + eCommerce plug-ins/module combo. Contact us to discuss your requirements further and we will recommend the optimal solution based on your goals.
